Enlightened by Faith, Enriched by Education

Dawn Heibler

My name is Dawn Heibler and I am excited to be teaching first grade at St.Kilian School for another school year. I joined the staff at St.Kilian last year after twenty years of teaching in public school education. I believe that God was calling me to work in a Catholic school. You see, I had interviewed for a K4 position at St. Mary’s in Barton the year before they closed the school. Well, that position did not work out, but I interviewed for the first grade position and here I am. I tell Mrs. Trimberger that it was fate she and I work together because the first grade position had opened soon after Mrs. Trimberger became the new principal at St. Kilian!

Making the move to St.Kilian has been a wonderful experience professionally, as well as personally. I love that I am able to use my Catholic upbringing (I attended St. Philip Neri Elementary School in Milwaukee for eight years), beliefs, and faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior with children in and out of the classroom. Collaborating with the other staff members at St. Kilian is truly a pleasure in that all ideas are heard and accepted. The parents and families at St. Kilian welcomed me with open arms and offered any assistance they could. The children at St. Kilian are thoughtful, kind, and curious to learn new things. Last year, I enjoyed working on the production of Aesop's Foibles and as part of the parent committee during Catholic Schools Week. Working at St. Kilian has been a blessing to myself and my family.

My husband Scott and I have been  married for eight years and we have a five year old daughter, Helaina. She attended the full-day K4 program three days a week last year. We could not have asked for a better first school experience for her. Helaina will be starting full day kindergarten at St. Kilian in the fall; she is more than excited I must say. We live in West Bend with our seven year old siamese cat, Sven (not named after the reindeer in Frozen), who we rescued from the Stevens Point Humane Society after I saw his picture and fell in love. As a family we love to talk walks outside, play board games, make crafts, read, and go to the Milwaukee County Zoo! We have aso been lucky enough to travel to San Francisco and Muncee to visit relatives as well as spending time in Land O’ Lakes at my husband’s family lake house.

I enjoy learning new  teaching strategies that engage and allow children to use their individual talents and learning styles to succeed. I also like collaborating with other education professionals who believe that all children can learn and will when they are in a caring, loving environment. Over the summer, I participated in the Summer Science Academy through the Milwaukee Archdiocese and took a reading course entitled, Reaching Young Readers: Improving Reading Skills.
