Curriculum

St. Kilian's curriculum provides sound academic preparation for high school with an ongoing effort to maintain its relevance and excellence. St. Kilian School is in the fourth year of a six-year update of the curriculums. Each year two curriculums, one daily curriculum and one specialist curriculum, is updated. Once the current six-year cycle is complete, the cycle will begin again so that every subject is updated every six years.

Each finished curriculum consists of St. Kilian's curriculum, the Archdiocesan curriculum and the public school curriculum which are used as references, the state standards, and a teacher reference document. St. Kilian's curriculum is written in a point system so that it can be used by the classroom teacher as an assessment tool for the textbooks and for the students.
St. Kilian requires the following subjects at all grade levels, from 4K through 8th grade, unless otherwise noted:

  • Religion
  • Reading (Literature in 7th and 8th grade)
  • Language Arts (English, Spelling, Phonics, Handwriting, Speaking, Listening, and Writing)
  • Mathematics (Algebra in 8th grade)
  • Science Social Studies (Political Science, Economics, History, Geography, Behavioral Sciences, Current Events, and Human Concerns)
  • Health
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Library Sciences
  • Computer Technology
  • Band (elective in 5th through 8th grades)
  • Forensics (elective in 7th and 8th grades)

St. Kilian's Library Resource Center offers activities to enhance group and independent reading enjoyment. Library skills are taught to 1st through 6th graders on a weekly basis. Kindergartners visit the library each week to hear a story and check out books. The library is open to junior high level students for independent research and reference work.

The computer technology curriculum, beginning in 4K, blends both educational and keyboarding programs. Both the library and computer curriculums are developed to coordinate with learning experiences in the classroom.

St. Kilian's music program helps students establish a solid relationship with music. Included are general music classes for kindergarten through 8th grade, the opportunity to join band beginning in 5th grade, and chorus for 7th and 8th graders. As part of an ever-growing program of specialized fine arts, this program offers students an opportunity to grow in appreciation and skill in all types of music.

The art program provides students with a means to express their creativity as they explore a variety of media and techniques. They are introduced to the principles of composition with an emphasis on the elements of design. Students become aware of the role art has in their every-day lives.

Physical education, as an integral part of the education process, contributes to the total growth and development of the student through physical activity. This program maintains that each student is a unique individual with specific talents that need to be developed and respected. In addition to learning good health and exercise habits, students are instructed in the rules and methods of several sports. They also participate in the "Jump Rope for Heart" program and the "Presidential Fitness Award" program.
